About Us

The festival is dedicated to Anthony Middleton, who sadly passed away in March 2017. Originally from the Blue Mountains in NSW, Tony had lived in the UK for over 50 years and was the most loyal supporter of the original Australian film festival and film societies from their beginnings and had a huge breadth of knowledge of Australian film - we loved him deeply and he will be sorely missed.

The Oz Film Festival is curated by a group of passionate and driven Australian & British citizens who are professionals, based in London, working in Film, Television and Publishing. Together, we have been running film events for the last seven years. The inaugural festival held over the last weekend in June 2017 at The Regent Street Cinema London showed seven new/recent Australian feature films or documentaries, ostensibly without UK distribution. Each feature screening was bookended with an Australian student short film and some with a Q&A about the feature with the director or cast. The Festival built on the success of regular screenings by the Australia [Film] House collective and the London Australian Film Society: experienced Australian practitioners living in London and was endorsed by the Australian High Commission in the UK. We are thrilled to announce the success of this festival & look forward to building on this. Please do subscribe below or follow us on social media to keep abreast on News & future screenings.

The Oz Film Festival is currently self funding, offers of assistance to support the festival and its future are graciously received, for more information please contact us here.

Laila Dickson
Festival Director

Australian ex-pat Laila Dickson, has lived in London for 13 years and has run LAFS with Moira McVean for the last 6 years. ‘I’ve been wanting to bring back the festival for years but now feel the time is perfect – we have a great team, gorgeous venue and a loyal audience.

We’re so passionate about Australian film and absolutely thrilled to have some of the best quality new features to choose from. The selection process wasn’t easy for our inaugural festival – the films that came out in the 18 months prior were of such a wonderfully high standard'.

Moira McVean
Festival Programmer

Moira McVean has been involved in Australian film for over 10 years, programming the last two incarnations of the Australian Film Festival at The Barbican and Picturehouse cinemas.
She currently works as the Head of Content Programming for Into Film.
‘I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with an actual Australian at last (!) who loves Australian cinema as much as I do, and I’m delighted to once again be raising the profile of Australian film in my home town of London'.

A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who've donated their time, expertise, creativity and enthusiasm in supporting the
Festival. And special thanks to all our friends and families, without whom none of this would have been possible.

We thank all our partners for their support of the festival.

The OZ Film Festival are passionate about supporting new and emerging film talent with our festival. To that end, in our first year, we screened short films by Australian film students from Swinburne University and Sydney Film School before our main features. We aim to expand this to a short film competition in our coming years.
